Following his success in getting Golden Hill into the Evening Post star match, and the Green Un team of the week, Martin settled back down to the serious work of picking a winning team. With many players absent or injured, he picked the following : Chris (GK), Craig (RB), Glenn (CB capt), Geoff (CB), Lee (LB), Matt (LM), Keith (CM), Danni (CM), Andy (RM), Steve (CF), Rich (CF), Paul (sub), Tony (sub), Neil (sub).
On yet another wet and windy day, the pitch was heavy and damp. Bristol N West kicked off with only ten men up-hill against Golden. Golden were quickly on the attack, breaking down the left hand side of the pitch with Lee and Matt exchanging passes. An early deflection saw Matt hesitate in front of goal with the ball on his right foot--but he hammered it home to give Golden the lead--his first right footed goal ever! Further attacks saw Rich chase down a defender in the box, win the ball and poke a second into the net--Golden were now 2-0 up after only ten minutes play.
Bristol then broke away down the left, however, beating Craig and Glenn during their approach. An excellent individual effort saw the Bristol player cut inside the box, chipping the advancing Chris to bring the score back to 2-1.
Golden continued their attacks, however, with Rich and Steve both poking in loose balls to give Golden a 4-1 lead at half time.
After the break, Tony came on for Lee and then Neil for Rich. Now playing up-hill, the pace of Golden's attacks slowed down, but their effectiveness remained the same. A long run saw Matt pick up a loose ball in the centre of the pitch, scream down the left hand side, cut inside the right back position and fire the ball past the keeper to give Golden a 5-1 lead.
The defence then decided to become attackers, and during some scrappy play let a Bristol player through on goal, a fine shot to the bottom right beat Chris to bring the scores to 5-2.
Tony then pounced down the left hand side, and hit a tremendous high shot from outside of the area toward goal. Although appearing to go over, it dipped late on, hit the bar and went in--6-2. Finally, Neil slid a ball through to Steve on goal, who kindly squared it past the keeper back to Neil to hit home into an empty net--7-2.
Two supporters, Rob and Russ, commented on the many misses (e.g. Steve over the bar from 1 yd out, Andy past the left post with an open goal!) --perhaps Golden should have won by more?
